While chic garage bands such as The Strokes appear to be the saviours of rock and roll, Oasis has been knocking back the lagers on a lazy boy as its favourite brutish sons. Ever since Definitely Maybe welcomed them as the loudest band in the world and the sophomore What's The Story (Morning Glory)? shot their fame to the stars, critics have been struggling to juggle the tiny dot between blatant unoriginality and brilliant pop artistry.
Not that the lack of sophistication bothered the near-capacity crowd at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. If it was a rude, loud rock and roll gig they bartered for with their moolah, then the Gallagher brothers, Andy Bell, Gem Archer and Zak Starkey knocked their cockles out.
Touring on the strength of their latest album Don't Believe The Truth, arguably their tightest and most cohesive record since Morning Glory, the band was in ruthless shoes. They pulled out old and concise bar chord grunts such as 'Bring It On Down' and completely ignored the lengthy epics on Be Here Now.
Not that 'Stand By Me' wasn’t sorely missed. But latest cuts such as the quirky 'The Importance Of Being Idle' and the karaoke value of recent single 'Lyla' turned out to be superstar substitutions. The abrasively punky 'Mucky Fingers' saw Noel in post-Factory Records form, delivering it with a sneer.
Then the Morning Glory alumni got out their hankies and initiated the loudest karaoke yell-alongs. The catchy Brit--rocking title track had the crowd singing along to the air-fisting chorus, while 'Wonderwall' saw the ladies hankering for more. But it was really 'Don't Look Back In Anger'—the equivalent of 'Imagine'—that everyone came to sing to; to sing about Sally. The lyrics never did make any sense, yet standing amongst the 15,000 crowd, as Noel led in singing "Please don't put your life in the hands / of a rock and roll band / and throw it all away"-it made perfect sense. Oh, the cruel irony.
No matter how hard Noel tried though, it was always going to be Liam'’s show. No matter how many times Gem struck guitar hero poses, it was Liam they came to watch. Head tilted, hands clasped at the back, believing every word as he sang 'Rock 'N' Roll Star'—that's what they paid for.
Some have claimed that Oasis is a band led by a cheap Lennon knockoff with an affinity for discourteously loud guitars and beer guzzling as a healthy activity. Granted, if you disliked The Beatles in the 60s and Oasis in 1994 then you are unlikely to love them to tiny bits today. But what Oasis lacks in grand imagination they make up for in working class-like proficiency. A good song's a good song even if the guy who wrote it couldn't spell 'idiot' or beats up paparazzi for sport.
With a sizeable decade-long catalogue to pick through, Oasis could have packed the two-hour show with classics. Being their cocky selves, they chucked notable tracks such as 'Some Might Say' and 'Supersonic' aside. But as the last note of their cover of The Who's 'My Generation' lingered after a lengthy rock jam at the end, where Liam cheekily picked a girl from the crowd, gave her a tambourine and told her to stand at the centre of the stage before walking off, the crowd heaved a satisfying sigh. The kind of sigh where you know the S$100 you forked out was worth it; the gratitude that you managed to experience some rock and roll carnage before mid-life crisis kicks in.
